Sharjah hotels register 2 million guests in 2014

Sharjah’s hotels registered more than two million guests during 2014, according to the latest statistics from Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA). Sharjah’s tourism received a boost during the past year as the Islamic Cultural Capital for 2014 and its new status as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2015 is expected to bring even more focus to emirate.

Sharjah hotels now number 106, including 50 hotels and 56 hotel apartments, with the number of hotel rooms in the emirate rising to 10,000. A number of new hotels and resorts are currently under development, namely a 4-star, 200 room Novotel located adjacent to Sharjah Expo, a 4-star Four Points hotel, an Aloft boutique hotel and the 349 room Sheraton Sharjah Beach Resort & Spa, which is expected to open by the end of 2015. Meanwhile, The Chedi Khor Fakkan mountainside villa resort, a Sharjah Investment and Development Autority (Shurooq) project is also in its final stages of construction.

The SCTDA announced Sharjah’s annual hotel trade statistics at ITB Berlin, a global travel industry trade show that attracts more than 11,000 exhibitors and 110,000 visitors each year.  The Sharjah delegation to ITB Berlin includes Sharjah Airport Authority, Sharjah Airport Travel Agency (SATA), Shurooq, Sharjah Environment & Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), Sharjah Museums Department, Sharjah National Hotels, Coral Beach Resort, Golden Tulip Sharjah, Ramada Sharjah, Radisson Blu Resort, Sheraton Sharjah Beach Resort & Spa, Sharjah Premiere Group, Al Shaab Village and Spark Hotel & Deluxe Apartments etc. This is the 18th year that Sharjah has promoted it’s tourism sector at the event.

The government has invested heavily in developing the sector’s infrastructure and tourism numbers and views tourism as a strategic pillar of the emirate’s economy.
