The Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA) is preparing to launch the activities of the 23rd edition of the Sir Bu Nair Festival on the 18th and 19th of this month, with the participation of a number of government agencies in the Emirate of Sharjah. This year, the festival carries a renewed and varied agenda of environmental campaigns, sports tournaments, marine competitions, as well as various heritage activities aimed at enhancing the participants’ connection with environmental landmarks and educating them about the tourist sites that the Emirate of Sharjah abounds with.
The activities of the festival will be opened in the presence of the Higher Committee of the Festival, which is represented by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, Sharjah Police General Command and the Sharjah Sports Council, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, Sharjah International Marine Sports Club, and Sharjah Broadcasting Authority and the Emirates Marine Environmental Group.
The festival also enjoys supportive and distinguished sponsorship, with contributions from Tilal Properties and Sharjah Driving Institute.
Global Standing
Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, stressed the importance of the festival and its awareness and positive benefits on the environmental, heritage, and tourism levels alike, and supports plans aimed at preserving the environmental aspect of the island and protecting its aesthetic value and preserving its biodiversity.
Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, said that the island’s location on the map of global interest was further consolidated after it deservedly joined the preliminary UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012, which made it an important destination and one of the first destinations for heritage lovers, those interested in the environment and tourism around the world.
Richness and Diversity
Regarding the festival, Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi indicated that the activities were designed and prepared to be directed to all groups and segments of society, so that they have a variety of dimensions and fields.
She added: “As for the second day, the audience will have a day full of events and competitions from the early hours of the morning until the evening, as the fishing competition begins at dawn, followed by the swimming championship, then the kayak racing championship, and the attendees will conduct an inspection tour of the exhibition accompanying the festival. After its opening, they will enjoy the performances of the heritage band, the parade of sea bikes and the heritage rowing.
The events include swimming, football, playstation and kayak tournaments, as well as searching for Al-Dana, before the festival concludes with the release of sea turtles to their natural waters in the reserve.
HE Hana Saif Al Suwaidi concluded her speech by thanking all the government agencies participating in the festival, and the efforts of the sponsors, which confirms their social responsibility and institutional values towards the environment and preserving its components and elements.
Sir Bu Nair Island
In addition, Sir Bu Nair Island is an island located 110 kilometers from the city of Sharjah. The island is distinguished by its sandy beaches and clear waters, and its surroundings are rich in coral and fish life, and its area is about 13 square kilometers.
The island is of international importance; Where the name of the reserve was included in the International Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar), in order to preserve its environmental components rich in biodiversity, it was also included in the UNESCO preliminary list of World Heritage Sites, and its acceptance in a memorandum of understanding on the protection and management of sea turtles and their habitats in the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia.
